Elegance, refinement and drama are the most common words that most people use to describe Christian Dior. Christian Dior has always been popular with the Hollywood jet set, glamorous stars and the world’s most stylist women, including Ava Gardner, Marlene Dietrich, Rita Hayworth, Madonna, the Duchess of Windsor and the late Princess Diana.
Originally from the coastal town of Normandy, Christian Dior moved to Paris with his parents at the end of the World War. After completing his education at the Ecole des Sciences Politiques, he opened an art gallery that featured the works of Bérard, Tchelichev, the Berman brothers and many others. The gallery, however, did not last long and closed down shortly after his mother’s death and father’s bankruptcy. Despite the setbacks, Monsieur Dior continued to be motivated by his creativity and became very interested in fashion. His sketching landed him his first job with “Le Figaro”, a Paris newspaper. Very soon after, he progressed to become an assistant designer for the House of Robert Piguet, then moved on to join the House of Lucien Lelong. In 1946, with the financial backing from Marcel Baussac, he started his own couture house.
In 1947, Monsieur Dior presented his first collection at the Christian Dior Haute Couture house on 30 Avenue Montaigne in Paris, France. The collection quickly termed as “The New Look” was his claim to fame as he broke away from the traditional silhouette and replace it with the famous bar jacket and large skirts. Introduced just shortly after World War II, it was revolutionary for its time, and while it shocked some, it was adored by many.
